Pastors Wives conference sparks excitement for future DIY classes

Excitement was evident for both teacher and students as Fancy Finds director Renee Gregory taught a “Do It Yourself” (DIY) class at a Pastor’s Wives conference on July 12. Not only were the ladies enthusiastic about learning new skills, but Renee was astounded by the diverse age range of the group that had gathered at Camp Caraway in Sophia. The participants’ ages ranged from 35 to 75 years old - four decades.

“I thought it was a good indicator of the different groups we could get in and serve” said Renee. She seemed very optimistic about the variety in ages that would attend future classes.

Renee taught the pastors wives how to create a chalkboard that would look great hanging in any kitchen or living room. “Oh you write on it, wow!” said Vickie Parker of Baton Baptist Church.

While optimistic about the DIY class, Vickie admitted that she was a little nervous beforehand. When asked if she had ever participated in a DIY class before, Vickie exclaimed, “No, can’t you tell?”

Renee worked to create a very informal class setting, and

engaged in conversation with everyone as though they were best friends. Laughter constantly filled the room as the ladies were quick to make fun of their mistakes. Sylvia Murphey from Gabriel’s Creek was another attendee who had never been in a DIY class before. Sylvia mentioned that she was a DIY’er, and “just liked to do crafts in general.” By the end of the class, Sylvia was proud of her product and mentioned that she would be interested in attending more DIY classes in the future.

The majority of the women participating in the class were beginners, but were very optimistic about the challenge ahead. The pastors wives laughed and encouraged one another as they all learned new DIY skills together. The ladies embraced their crafty side, each creating a frame that was unique in its own way. By the end of the class, there wasn’t anyone in the room who didn’t have a smile of her face.
